This article incorporates many of the same thoughts as the Dr. Ormrod does in her video. This article is more lengthy and therefore includes a a little more information. It discusses the theories of learning included Gestalt.
I especially love the section called teaching problem solving. Learning by rote and learning by understanding is discussed and how learning by understanding is preferred and leads to good retention.
I use KWL as an organizer when we have a guest speaker that will provide meaningful curriculum such as autopsies. What do the students already know, what do they want to know and what have they learned. This keeps them engaged on the speaker.
